C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism)

A voluntary CBP security program that grants importers and brokers reduced inspections in exchange for verified supply-chain standards.

C-TPAT is a voluntary partnership between U.S. Customs and Border Protection and private-sector importers, carriers, and brokers who commit to documented security practices across their supply chains.

Why it matters

Certified members receive tangible benefits: fewer cargo examinations, front-of-line processing, and assignment of a dedicated Supply Chain Security Specialist. CBP reports that Tier 2 and Tier 3 partners see inspection rates roughly 4 to 6 times lower than non-members.

For an SME importer, the path starts with a self-assessment against CBP's minimum security criteria, followed by a site validation within one year of approval. Maintaining status requires annual self-assessments and periodic revalidations: typically every three to four years for Tier 2, with Tier 3 reserved for partners demonstrating best practices beyond baseline requirements.
