GLOSSARY
Authorized Economic Operator (AEO)
A WCO-defined trusted-trader status that grants reduced inspections, simplified procedures, and priority treatment in customs. Equivalent programs include the EU AEO, US C-TPAT, and Mexico OEA.
The Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) programme grants security-and-compliance-vetted businesses preferential customs treatment — fewer physical inspections, faster release, and recognition under mutual-recognition agreements with partner customs administrations. AEO status is awarded against the WCO SAFE Framework and corresponds to similar national programmes (US C-TPAT, Mexico OEA, China AA, Singapore STP).
Why it matters
AEO is one of the few customs decisions that compounds: every clean shipment reinforces the rating; every suspended status (e.g. for AI mis-classification or sanctions screening failure) jeopardises the broader treatment your supply chain is built around.
