GLOSSARY
WCO Data Model
A standardized data specification from the World Customs Organization that defines how cross-border trade information is structured for electronic customs declarations.
The WCO Data Model is a standardized set of data definitions and electronic message formats published by the World Customs Organization to harmonize cross-border regulatory information exchange between traders, customs administrations, and other border agencies.
Why it matters
When you file electronic customs declarations, your commercial invoice fields, packing list data, and transport documents map to specific WCO Data Model elements. Understanding this mapping helps you prepare cleaner submissions and reduces rejection rates at automated customs gates.
The WCO Data Model underpins most national Single Window systems. If your broker or freight forwarder requests data in a particular format, they are likely translating your documents into WCO-compliant messages. Version 3.x is the current reference, documented at the WCO's Data Model page (wcoomd.org/en/topics/facilitation/instrument-and-tools/tools/data-model.aspx).
